Shopper is able to recognize books, CDs, DVDs, and video games by their cover art. Just point your phone at one of these products and hold still. There's no need to press the shutter button. When a product is found, a glowing rectangle will appear around it, and then the search results page will open automatically.

Image search does not yet work on other kinds of products, and it needs a data connection to operate. Recognition can take a few seconds, depending on how much light there is, and the speed of the network.

Barcode Scanning

In addition to searching for product artwork, Shopper can also scan barcodes like UPC, ISBN and QR Codes.

Again, there is no need to press the shutter. Just hold the phone still about six inches away from the barcode and it will be recognized.

IMPORTANT: Product barcodes require a phone with autofocus. If your device has fixed focus, please try to scan the cover art for media items, or use voice and text search.

Barcode scanning works best in good light. If you're having problems, try holding the product in front of you, rather than pointing downwards. Also try moving the phone further away, and aligning the barcode with the grid.

Sometimes Shopper will read the barcode digits correctly, but no products will be found. This may happen if Google Product Search does not know about the product. In this case Shopper will display web search results instead.
