  3. Installation Instructions

    Note:
    • If you already have one or more ExpressSAS adapters installed and you are installing additional adapters, you do NOT need to perform any of these procedures unless you are updating a previously installed driver.

Windows XP & Server 2003 Installation

    1. Upgrading your ExpressSAS Windows driver
    2. Adding an ExpressSAS adapter to an existing Windows installation
    3. Installing a fresh copy of Windows onto a disk attached to the ExpressSAS adapter

    1. Upgrading your ExpressSAS Windows driver

      Note:
      • It is strongly recommended that you update to SP1 or later for Windows before installing the ExpressSAS driver.

To install from the ExpressSAS Installation CD:

      1. Log on to Windows as the system administrator.
      2. Insert the ExpressSAS Installation CD into a CD or DVD drive and the CD will automatically start. If the CD does not start, navigate to the root of the CD and run 'autorun.bat'.
      3. Select "Windows Drivers" from the items on the left side of the screen.
      4. Select the appropriate CPU based operating system from operating system choices.
      5. Select "Install Windows Driver" to launch the driver installer.
      6. Click 'Install' and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the driver installation.

To install from the ATTO Technology website:

      1. Log on to Windows as the system administrator.
      2. Go to the Downloads section of www.attotech.com and locate the driver download for your adapter and operating system.
      3. Click on the link to download the file. Internet Explorer users may select 'Run' to automatically run the downloaded self-extracting executable. Otherwise, select a download destination and run the self-extracting executable when the download is complete.
      4. Click 'Unzip' to extract the driver files and launch the driver installer.
      5. Click 'Install' and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the driver installation.

To install from a directory containing the ExpressSAS driver:

      1. Log on to Windows as the system administrator.
      2. Navigate to the directory containing the ExpressSAS driver and run Setup.exe.
      3. Click 'Install' and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the driver installation.

    2. Adding an ExpressSAS adapter to an existing Windows installation

      Note:
      • It is recommended that you complete this installation procedure before attaching any devices to the adapter.

      1. Perform the installation procedure in (A) to pre-install the ExpressSAS driver. Shutdown Windows when Setup prompts you to do so.
      2. Install your ExpressSAS adapter into an available PCI expansion slot.
      3. Restart Windows. Windows should detect your ExpressSAS adapter and the Found New Hardware Wizard should appear. Proceed through the wizard with the default settings for each adapter channel. During the installation, you may be prompted to insert the ExpressSAS installation media. Make sure that the driver you used in procedure (A) is present and click 'OK' to continue installation.
      4. Shutdown the system and setup the final adapter configuration.

        1. If the ExpressSAS adapter is replacing another adapter in the system, disconnect the cables from the adapter and remove the adapter from the system. Optionally, you can move the ExpressSAS adapter to the PCI slot that the previous adapter occupied if this slot is more suitable for the ExpressSAS adapter.
        2. Attach the appropriate cables to the ExpressSAS adapter.
        3. Close the computer chassis, turn on the power and restart Windows. Note: If you moved the adapter to a different PCI slot, the Found New Hardware Wizard will appear. Proceed through the wizard with the default settings for each adapter channel to complete the installation.

    3. Installing a fresh copy of Windows onto a disk attached to the ExpressSAS adapter

      Note:

      1. Start Windows text mode setup as per the instructions provided with Windows. Press F6 when the first blue window appears called "Windows Setup". The setup program will display a prompt in the status window on the bottom left of the monitor. Setup will continue to load files after you press F6.
      2. A new window will appear that gives instructions to specify additional mass storage devices. Press 'S' indiciating that you wish to install a storage device.
      3. Insert the ExpressSAS installation floppy disk in drive A: and press Enter. You should then be presented with a screen from which you would normally select a driver, but only a list of ExpressSAS adapters should appear. Select your adapter and Press Enter.
      4. Windows Setup will load the files from the floppy and then display screen described in step 2. The 'ATTO ExpressSAS' device should now be listed as detected.
      5. Repeat steps 2 - 4 for any other vendor-supplied driver installation disks. After all other drivers have been processed, press Enter and proceed with the rest of the Windows installation procedure.

      Note:

      • When Windows begins copying files to your hard disk, you will again be prompted to insert the ExpressSAS installation floppy disk (and any other vendor-supplied disks you used during custom installation). This is normal. The first time you inserted the disks, Windows only loaded the drivers into memory; the second time you insert the disk(s), Windows is copying the driver to your hard disk.
      • It is strongly recommended that you update to SP1 or later for Windows when installation is complete.

  4. Registry Settings

    Note:
    • Modifying your registry incorrectly may result in making your machine unbootable. Please use care in editing the registry.
    • All registry settings are DWORD values.
    • The following settings can be found in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\esasraid\Parameters\Device.

  5. Driver Events

The reporting of driver events is controlled by the EventLogMask registry setting. EventLogMask is the sum of the event type values for the events you would like to see.

    Event Type Value (hexadecimal) Description
Fatal 0x00000001 Fatal errors, always reported
    SCSI 0x00000004 SCSI command errors
    Protocol 0x00000008 SAS protocol errors
    Login 0x00000010 Device login/logout events
    Resource 0x00000040 Resource usage failures
    Info 0x00000080 Informational messages
    Underflow 0x00000800 Data underflow errors

In general, only errors that are output for event type 'Fatal' are significant; all others are mostly for informational or diagnostic purposes. When turning on event logging, be aware that certain events reported as errors are expected. For example, a SCSI Check Condition error will be reported for the first command sent to a device after power on or a reset condition. Also, certain data underrun errors are expected by the software and are normal.

All events report the adapter number on which the event occurred. The adapter number is simply the order in which Windows initialized the adapter channels and has no relevance to what slot the adapter is in or which channel of the adapter is being reported.
